Since its inception in 2005 the United States, the Markel/USEF Dressage Young Horse Program has helped develop a depth to American Dressage that benefits breeders, riders, trainers, and a program for the future. The third Markel/USEF Dressage Training Session of 2013 was in New England at the lovely Rosebrook Farm, Georgetown, Mass, April 13 and 14. A well-rounded group of 13 quality young horses selected for the session worked with USEF Young Horse Coach Scott Hassler. "I got exactly what I wanted from the clinic, not only a better understanding of how to better train my horse but how to improve my training and riding techniques with all the young horses that come through my barn,” said participant Dee Loveless. “The clinic was very educational and the selection of horses and riders could not have been better. There was a very good variety of talented horses and riders participating in the clinic, all with different areas that needed improvement."

The open training session was attended by breeders, horse owners and local young horse enthusiasts. In addition to two days of mounted lessons, participants enjoyed discussions with Hassler as well as lunches sponsored by Rosebrook Farm and DressageDaily's Mary Phelps a Markel Equine and Farm Insurance Specialist. Phelps asked Hassler to help her do the drawing from those who had registered giving out several items such as Back on Track Saddle pads and mini blankets, the book The Making of the Modern Warmblood, and DressageDaily T-Shirts adding to the fun of the well attended event.

"I grew up in Massachussetts, had my first barn job here, belonged to Pony Club and worked for Dottie Morkis in the 1960's long before her Olympic fame," said Phelps. "It was a fun two days, meeting new friends and seeing many longtime ones as well. This program is my passion, I love it and am proud to be with Markel as well as supporting the news and updates on my website DressageDaily.com."

"It was nice to visit the New England area a second time for a Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Training Session. Participation from the auditors, owners, breeders and trainers who attended was terrific," said Hassler. "The participating horses were a great mixture of U.S.-bred and imported horses and overall, the quality was quite nice. I hope to see some of these horses at the Championships in August."
