Ryan Hites Wins Sportsmanship Award at 1999 NAYRC

" The important thing is not to win, but to take part; the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well,".... Capt Andrew B de Szinay.

The Captain Andrew B. de Szinay Memorial Sportsmanship Trophy presented by Alan Balch, president of The American Horse Shows Association, and Howard B Simpson organizer of the 1999 NAYRC at Tempel Farms was given to Ryan Hites of Woodinville Washington, Dressage Region 6.

Considered by many to be the favorite for this year's gold medal, hites tragically lost his 1998 NAYRC Bronze medal partner, Staatsman to a severe case of colic Wednesday August 11, the day before he was to ride in the Team Test. In spite of such a crushing blow, Hites remained at the competition all week bolstered by the friendship and comradery of his fellow competitors.

The award honors the memory of Captain Andrew B. de Szinay, teacher, dressage judge, technical delegate and long time friend and supporter of the Young Riders' program.
