On Friday afternoon, July 17, Robert Whitaker, the son of show jumping legend John Whitaker, took victory in the 80,000 Euro Prize of Europe presented by the Mannheimer Ausstellungs-Gesellschaft at the 100th CSIO of Germany. As the last starter in the 12 horse jump-off he bested still the time of local hero Hans-Dieter Dreher. Aboard the former breeding stallion of the Marbach State Stud, Catwalk IV, Robert finished in clear 38.05 seconds. Runner-up ‘Hansi’ Dreher (Germany) had just taken the lead with the grey gelding Cool and Easy (0/38.25) as one starter before from the in Germany living Italian rider Emanuele Gaudiano and the nine year old Casper (0/39.38). Fourth place (0/47.08) went to Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum (Germany) with the just eight year old Comanche.

"I saw the ride of Hansi Dreher and I knew it would be pretty tough to beat him and that I had to give everything", said the winner in the press conference. Hans-Dieter Dreher stated,"I had hoped it would be enough, but I am also very satisfied with second place."

Show organizer Peter Hofmann was very happy about the presence of the former Baden-Wurttemberg prime minister and today’s EU commissioner Guenther Oettinger, who would ennoble the event and “fulfill us with joy and proud.” Oettinger himself was very pleased as well “that here at Mannheim a Prize of Europe was taking place. With the CSIO, Mannheim proves once more to be the sport city of Baden-Wurttemberg.”

Guenther Oettinger congratulated the three first-placed riders and was glad about the muli-culture in Europe, “A winner of the United Kingdom, a rider from Baden-Wurttemberg and an in Germany living Italian rider, It could not have come out any better.” Stefany Goschmann, the manager of the Mannheimer Ausstellungs-Gesellschaft, was just enthusiastic about the performances of horse and rider, as she said. Peter Hofmann expects for tomorrow’s 100th Nations Cup of Germany a ‚full house’ with about 8,000 spectators. “This would be super!“ as the director of the CSIO smiles.
