Sandy, Utah – Premier Equestrian recently visited the farm of Todd Minikus in Wellington, Florida to bring equestrians an inside look at the decorated show jumper’s daily training routine. Minikus and Heidi Zorn, President of Premier Equestrian, discuss how certain jumps are used to train both horses and riders and why their construction and durability are important for safety reasons as well as for training over a professionally built jump course.
Minikus, who has been a top show jumping rider for over 20 years, elaborates on how important it is to train both horses and riders to face intimidating jumps like the ones they will see in the show arena. In the video, Minikus demonstrates how the Culvert Wall, with its line of red flowers and solid appearing arches, works as a good first jump. Its more intimidating appearance might cause the young horse to back off, and force the rider to apply strong leg and ride the horse to the base of the jump.
Minikus also constructs a Liverpool, and elaborates on the importance of schooling over jumps that are as similar as possible to fences used in the show ring. He goes on to the Skinny jump, which he notes as difficult due to its claustrophobic design and intimidating appearance, in addition to the Roll top, Rock wall, and a specially constructed Premier custom jump. Minikus and Zorn also go through jumping technique and training philosophies over the roll top, strategies for approaching jumps, how to walk a course, importance of jump construction and the weight of poles. The Culvert Wall, Liverpool, skinny or narrow fence, Rock wall and Roll top are just a few of the many jumps Premier Equestrian offers, along with their services of making customized jumps for sponsors, farms, and shows. For their design team, the sky is the limit in customization, from giant fly spray bottles to just about any conceivable idea.
Minikus has won the American Grand Prix Association Budweiser Grand Prix of Indianapolis five times, the 2001 Rolex/U.S. Equestrian Team Show Jumping Championship, and competed on six Nation's Cup Teams and in five FEI World Cup Show Jumping Finals. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he served as the Alternate for the U.S. Equestrian Team Olympic Show Jumping Squad. He recently won the I Love New York Grand Prix with Babalou 41 in June, and during week three of the 2014 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival, Minikus and Quality Girl were one of the winners in the $34,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round 3. Concluding the 2014 competition, Minikus and Babalou 41 won the $100,000 Suncast® 1.50m Championship Jumper Series Final.
Minikus keeps a busy schedule, competing regularly while training approximately 25 horses, green to grand prix. He enjoys working with horses at all ages and experience levels. He and his team were thrilled with Premier’s jumps. “Our Florida farm has harsh climate conditions, and it can be brutal for our equipment,” said Minikus. “Wood jumps rot and mold grows within days. Aluminum jumps are pricey and heavy. The jump equipment we received from Premier is ideal: very durable, safe, and maintenance free. Their product has restored our faith in PVC jumps!”
