Lock To Load to Face First Place Queen in Rainbow Trials

Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA - June 29, 2003 - Bob Grimes and Paul Jones' Lock To Load, the winner of the Los Alamitos Winter Derby, and First Place Queen, the winner of the Golden State and Los Alamitos Million futurities, will clash in a trial to the Grade 1 Rainbow Derby Friday at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico.
Jones, the leading trainer at Los Alamitos, has already made his way to New Mexico to take care of the final details as Lock To Load heads for his high-profile rematch against First Place Queen. Lock To Load and First Place Queen also faced off in the Million.
This trial will also feature Eye Opening Episode, the nation's champion 2-year-old gelding, and talented sprinters Southern Cartel and Silvered Eyes. The Rainbow trials will also feature Meteoric, the runner-up in the Million Futurity, Million finalist Royal Miracle Dip and champion 2-year-old colt First To Flash.
EG High Desert Farms' Hawkish, the winner of the Kindergarten Futurity on May 17, will drill Tuesday morning in preparation for the trials to the Ed Burke Memorial Futurity August 12. Trained by Concepcion Balderrama, Hawkish will win a $1 million cash bonus if he adds the Ed Burke and Los Alamitos Million futurities to his Kindergarten victory.
Balderrama added that Magic And Rhythm is doing fine after her victory in the Governor's Cup Derby on June 21.
"She gave it her all in that race and understandably she was a little tired," Balderrama said. "That's nothing new with her. She always runs so hard that she needs some rest after her races. We galloped her this Sunday and she looked good."
Lucas Racing Inc's Ocean Cartel posted the fastest of 25 drills at 220 yards on Saturday, June 28. A Kindergarten finalist, Ocean Cartel worked handily in :12.40. He is expected to make his next start in the Ed Burke trials.
Also on Saturday, Dutch Masters III's Kindergarten finalist Beyond Brilliance breezed 350 yards in :18.70. Like Ocean Cartel and Hawkish, he figures to be part of the Ed Burke qualifying race. Other horses that worked on Saturday include; multiple stakes finalist Special Queen Sa (350 yards handily from the gate in :18.0), Brazilian stakes winner Emanuele Toll (breezed 350 yards from the gate in :18.60) and hard-knocking stakes winner Drop Your Sox (breezed 350 yards in :18.80).
