Wellington, FL - With a year-round, full schedule of AA, A, and B-rated horse shows, as well as local and regional hunter/jumper shows, Swan Lake Horse Shows has competition tailored to every level and budget. For Laura Gross and Briana Kenerson the Winter Finale Horse Show, held March 19-22, was the perfect fit for each of their up-and-coming 6-year-old mounts.
The A rated horse show offered more than 20 hunter divisions, and it was in the Adult Amateur Hunters that Gross saw success aboard her own gelding, Same Page.
Gross, of York, Pennsylvania, purchased Same Page a year ago and has loved working with him and watching him come along with the assistance of professional, Jennifer Marshall. Gross rode the gelding to the Adult Amateur Hunter Championship after earning two blue ribbons over fences as well as the top call under saddle. Same Page also clinched the Pre-Green Working Hunter division championship with Marshall in the irons.
"He is quite a character. We really enjoy him and he entertains us constantly," Gross said.
For Gross, there's no better place to bring Same Page along than the Swan Lake Horse Shows. "It's a great venue. I like the fact that in the winter, there is space to warm up in the indoor," Gross said. "It's very challenging because a lot of the farms don't have indoor schooling areas, and the ground outside is frozen so you can't lounge or school properly."
Gross continued, "Especially with a young horse, to take them off the trailer where they have been standing for six or seven hours is hard. Swan Lake has a really nice size schooling area that not only gives us the luxury of lounging in the morning, it also allows us to warm up which is needed mentally for a young horse like mine; also physically it is much better.
In the summer I like that Swan Lake has multiple outdoor rings and nice footing. They continually upgrade the footing, and it drains well. I just don't have to worry about it being slippery."
Briana Kenerson of Sykesville, Maryland shares similar sentiments for the top of the line show facility, and she also appreciates the proximity of the grounds to her trainer, Mike Keech's, farm.
"My favorite part about showing at Swan Lake is that it is only 10 minutes from Mike Keech's barn, so we get to go to every show there," Kenerson said. "I love the atmosphere there because everyone is willing to help and has a great attitude."
Over the weekend, Kenerson claimed the Thoroughbred Hunter division reserve championship as well as wins in the $500 WIHS/NAL Adult Amateur Hunter Classic and the CPJHSA 3' Adult Medal, all aboard Joanne Beusch's Brightly Shining.
"[Brightly Shining] came off the track in October 2013 and started hunter training May 2014. She moved up to 3' in December 2014 and currently is showing on the A/AA circuit in the Thoroughbred Hunter, Adult Amateur 18-35 Hunter, and Adult Medal classes," Kenerson said of the 6-year-old mare.
"This mare is so green that every ribbon at these shows is a success. Getting a championship ribbon is just the icing on the cake," Kenerson said. "I was extremely happy with Brightly Shining at this show because she is improving with every ride, and I think the judges are starting to agree with me!"
Swan Lake Horse Shows competition continues this weekend, March 28-29, with the March Winter Local Finale. Find the complete schedule of all Swan Lake Horse Show events online here.
