Todd, Burton, Johnstone, Fredericks, Baldwin... all these names that will do the show at “Le Grand Complet” in Le Pin, France, from 17 to 21 August. They will be top billing of the event and will come for winning.
Let’s start with the legendary Mark Todd, one of the illustrious sportsman of New Zealand. Twice Olympic Champion (1984/1988), World Team Champion two times (1990/1998), bronze medal at the OG 2000, he ended his career started in 1971...to come back in 2008 and add the bronze team medal at the Beijing OG, and a tremendous victory in the mythic CCI4* of Badminton (GBR)!
Le Grand Complet will be the ultimate FEI World Cup leg in 2011, so the best riders at the provisional ranking will try to keep their positions.
The New Zealander Clarke Johnstone, leader of the FEI Eventing World Cup ranking (on the 27/07/11) with a total of 118 pts, will participate to the World Cup class riding two horses, Orient Express, which won this season the World Cup legs of Sydney (AUS) and Kihikihi (NZL), and Incognito, which was 3rd in Kihikihi (NZL).
The Australian Chris Burton, 2nd with 108 pts, will run the World Cup class with three mounts, notably Holstein Park Leilani, 2nd in Kihikihi (NZL), probably his best chance of victory in Le Pin.
Emily Baldwin, the young and talented British rider winner of Le Grand Complet 2010, is back with her top horse Drivetime to defend her title. She already won the World Cup leg of Chatsworth (GBR) in May. She won't be the only British rider to participate: more than 20 subjects of Her Majesty will take over Le Pin, one of them will be Sarah Bullimore, 2nd in Chatsworth (GBR) just behind Emily.
Clayton Fredericks (AUS) as a Guest Star
The Australian rider, and current world n°6 at the HSBC FEI ranking, belongs to the most faithful riders to Le Grand Complet. He will ride no more than 6 horses, 3 in the World Cup class (Bendigo, which won this year the CCI 3* of Saumur/FRA, Be My Guest 5th of the CICO 3* of Fontainebleau/FRA, and Dunges Laurent Rose 4th of the CCI4* of Luhmuhlen/GER). But this year, Clayton will start a new life in Le Pin...by attending a course designer clinic. He will be the assistant of the French course designer Pierre Le Goupil, maybe to prepare his reconversion. And if Clayton has still enough energy after all this work, he will (we hope so!) sing a bit to make it rock!
The other countries in the FEI World Cup class-
- The Chinese rider Alex Hua Tian, who remain as the very first international eventing rider of his country, announced his participation
- Belgium will show 7 riders and many more in the two other classes (CIC1*/CIC2*)
- Spain (4 riders)
- Czech Republic
- United States of America
- Australia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland will have several representatives in the CIC1*/CIC2*.
