At Dressage in the Sandhills, in Pinehurst, NC, Reese Koffler didn't plan to enter a USET qualifier her first time at Intermediaire I -- it just worked out that way. Not only was she making her first move up from the Young Rider's, she was riding against the best there is to offer. "I don't usually get nervous, but I was nervous yesterday!" she said, explaining why she had made an uncharacteristic error in the test. Regardless of her nerves, she and Joeri (Zeoliet x Danna) managed to place fifth and come back the next day to win the open version of the same test.
On a recent trip to Germany to train with Conrad Schumacher, Reese met the breeders of her horse, and later discovered that they knew the breeders of Alfredo as well. She had the exciting chance to see a video of Joery playing in a field as a week-old foal.
Reese's younger sister Lindsay Koffler was showing her horse Alfredo (Akzent x Witascha) for the first time, and also enjoyed a win. She claimed the Young Rider Team Test, (66.538) and placed third in the Individual Test (65.526).
"The internet has been really good for us in finding out the horses' backgrounds," said Lindsay.
While 22-year-old Reese, a student at the University of Kentucky, focuses on moving up to Grand Prix, 18-year-old Lindsay is looking toward the NAYRC and plans to start classes at UK in the fall to study Communications.
