Wellington, FL - February 4, 2011 - It was another beautiful day at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, home of the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival, which runs through April 3. The equitation riders were back to action today as the weekend approaches.
Kelcie Brophy, aboard the Lionshare Farm entry, Dynasty, took the top prize in the Platinum Performance USEF Show Jumping Talent Search first thing this morning. The class had twenty-nine entries and consisted of a jumping phase followed by a flat phase. The flat phase was for the riders who were ranked in the top twelve after the jumping portion of the class.
Brophy forged a quick connection with Dynasty, an eight-year-old warmblood gelding by Gem of India. The pair, who have only been together since yesterday, wasted no time taking over in the equitation ring. "I only started riding him yesterday, but he's really easy and really nice," stated Brophy.
The course, which contained multiple combinations, also had an option jump. The option segment of the course allowed riders to either jump a water jump or a vertical placed directly next to the water. Riders could choose either obstacle, however, the water jump could earn them more standing with the judges, as it was the harder of the two choices. Brophy's choice of the water jump may have helped her earn the top prize.
Second place in this morning's Platinum Performance USEF Show Jumping Talent Search went to Lauren Tyree aboard Salt Lake, an entry owned by the First Partners LLC. Third place was awarded to Victoria Colvin, riding Scott Stewart's VIP Z.
Brophy, who will also be showing in the Large Junior Hunters this weekend, gets her education through correspondence. "I long distance learn with the University of Nebraska," she said. Long distance learning allows Brophy to live full-time in Florida.
Tomorrow starts the weekend, and Children's Hunters and Pony Hunters will begin. Also, among the many children showing in their various divisions this weekend, the THIS Children's Medal will happen tomorrow in Ring 7.
