The Horses of the Camargue

As our Euro-Tour takes us through southern France along the tropical azure coastline, we visited the delta of the Rhone river where the "cheval de Camargue " roam free under the watchful eye of the mounted "guardians" (Camarguaise cowboys). Always gray-cream in color, with a square shaped head and about 13.1 hands in size, they are recognized as a breed in their own right since 1978.

This is also the area known for the flocks of pink flamingos and the black bull (taureaux) raised for bullfighting a popular form of entertainment in nearby Nimes, and in the ancient Roman amphitheater of Arles.
