A great lady hosting a great cause! Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear and the Kentucky Cancer Program at UofL’s James Graham Brown Cancer Center will host the Fifth Annual Horses and Hope Race Day Sunday, Nov. 18, at Churchill Downs. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. with first post time at 12:40 p.m. The Horses and Hope program begins at 1 p.m. and the event continues throughout the day of racing. Horses and Hope Race Day features a luncheon buffet on Millionaires Row, race handicapping tips with racing analyst Jill Byrne of Churchill Downs, remarks by the first lady, gifts for survivors and more. Breast cancer survivors and their families and friends are invited to wear pink to highlight breast cancer awareness.
People who attend will have the opportunity to meet Gunnar Deatherage, Louisville fashion designer and Season 10 participant on Lifetime TV’s “Project Runway”; James Graham Brown Cancer Center Ambassador Jessica Rizzo; and State District 44 Rep. Joni Jenkins of Shively. Jenkins sponsored House Bill 7 in 2005 that created the Breast Cancer Research and Education Trust Fund. The fund is intended to support and advance breast cancer research, education, treatment, screening and awareness efforts in Kentucky. It awards competitive grants to eligible organizations that provide breast cancer programs and services. Kentucky taxpayers can donate to the fund through their state income tax returns.
Horses and Hope is a project of Beshear, the Kentucky Cancer Program and the Pink Stable, a committee of Kentucky horse owners, trainers, stable owners, jockeys, racetrack representatives and others. Pink Stable’s mission is to increase breast cancer awareness, education, screening and treatment referral among Kentucky’s horse industry workers and their families.
Cost to attend Horses and Hope Race Day is $28 for adults and $18 for children age 12 and under. The price includes admission to Churchill Downs, parking at Gate 10, seating on Millionaires Row Four and the luncheon buffet.
