Well known trainer and Highlife Farms neighbor Hannah Johnson was an active bidder, and brought in a few student as well. “I guess you would have to call it beginner's luck.” said Hannah. “Somewhere around l990, Kathy Murphy and I had attended a Eurosport auction in Virginia, held in conjunction with a big horse show. We went to the auction at Highlife to support the Sims, our good neighbors and friends, and we had always been great fans of their foundation sire, Highlife. His four year old son, Hemingway, now lives next door at Halfpass Farm. Joan Sims told me that he was the first foal bred and born there, and she knows that together we will make a positive and visible statement for their breeding program.
At the last minute, I called my student and friend, Jeanne Sweazy, to think about the auction. She had a very very small budget to find a second horse. The first horse we had previewed went way above the limit, but the second horse was the gorgeous bay two year old, Hallmark, also by Highlife. The match is perfect, and we feel extremely lucky to have been in the right place at the right time.”
