An Exceptional Background

Barbara Strawson - FEI Dressage Rider, Trainer, Instructor and Author

Barbara Strawson draws on an exceptional background for her career as a dressage rider and trainer.  Barbara trained for three years in Germany with Olympic gold medalist Nicole Uphoff-Selke.  She has trained horses through the FEI levels, competed Grand Prix internationally, and earned her USDF bronze and silver medals.  Barbara is now back in the United States, with horses and students in training in Maryland.

She continues to work with Nicole and has opened opportunities for others, for example by hosting Nicole’s clinics at Tenacity Stables and Wyndham Oaks in Maryland.  Many people were introduced to Barbara’s riding at the 2008 PVDA Ride for Life Dancing Horse Challenge, when she rode Socrates in a freestyle dedicated to her late mentor, Jill Hassler-Scoop.

Barbara Strawson is an author with two books under her belt.  She has a B.A. in psychology and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Delaware.  Barbara is also a Balimo™ Graduate Core Instructor.

Long-time student and friend, Denise Rotko, first met Barbara at Hilltop Farm where Rotko began her lessons with the then assistant trainer in 1994. “Barb has a very good understanding of proper horse training,” says Rotko. “She has the talent for getting the best out of her students. She is patient, kind, listens carefully and is an excellent communicator for both the student and the horse. She has high standards for her own riding and it as been a joy to watch her talent blossom. Believing in her abilities made it easy for us to buy two horses for her to train and compete.”
