Euro Update: Vivaldi and Westpoint, 2007 Pavo Cup Champions

The chestnut KWPN stallion Vivaldi (Krack C x Jazz) and the black KWPN stallion Westpoint (Jazz x Michelangelo) have won the 2007 Pavo Cup Finals in Ermelo, The Netherlands.

Under Hans Peter Minderhoud, Vivaldi became the new 5-year old Pavo Cup champion. The chestnut achieved the highest overall mark of 382 points after a tough duel with the licensed stallion Vivaldo (Polansky x Montecristo) under Mirelle van Kemenade-Witlox. Vivaldi scored two 10's under guest judge riders Seth Boschman and Carl Hester. Boschman liked riding both stallions. "I had a super feeling on both of them. There is actually little to say, except that both stallions are fantastic to ride." British Grand Prix rider Carl Hester was also very enthusiastic about Vivaldi. "He's the best 5-year old I've ever ridden. He's so forwards and has a enormous engine which you only have to steer. I think I want to take him home."

Westpoint (by Jazz x Michelangelo) has won the 2007 Pavo Cup Finals for 4-year olds. The black stallion was in the lead from the start, winning the qualification round and final round and scored the highest under Boschman and Hester. The six finallists, which were ridden by Boschman and Hester, were three mares and three stallions. Westpoint was the winner, scoring 10 under Hester and 8.5 under Boschman. Westpoint had a total of 362 points and became the 2007 Pavo Cup Champion. "It was one of the most pleasant rides I ever had on a young horse," Carl Hester said about Westpoint. "He's got power from behind and moves nicely uphill. Westpoint definitely has talent for the upper level work and is a horse for the future." Wynton placed second overall with 351.5 points in total. He received a 9.5 from Seth Boschman and 9.0 from Carl Hester. "I liked the stallion. He was fresh and active and very easy to ride," Boschman commented.

Iron Spring Farm Acquires Riverman ISF

Iron Spring Farm has purchased a new Dutch warmblood licensed stallion in The Netherlands. Mary Alice Malone acquired Riverman, a bay stallion by Kenwood x Voltaire, from the Van Manen brothers. The 9-year old stallion flew to the States on Sunday August 19, 2007. In the U.S.A. he will be called "Riverman-ISF" to prevent confusion with Hilltop Farm's Riverman. Riverman-ISF will be stable mates with UB40, Sir Sinclair, Consul, Rampal and Judgement.

Hester Withdraws from British E.C. Team, Ross-Davies Replaces

British team rider Carl Hester has withdrawn from competing on the British team at the 2007 European Dressage Championships in Turin, Italy, August 29 - September 2, 2007. Hester's horse Lecantos, an 11-year old Oldenburg gelding by Levantos I and owned by the Irish Sasha Stewart, has injured himself and is not fit for the Championhips.

"The horse has knocked his off fore, presumably in the field but possibly in the stable, and bruised his tendon. It's a very minimal injury, but we can't risk taking him to Turin as he needs time for the bruising to heal. In two weeks time he'll probably be fine," Carl Hester told the British magazine Horse and Hound.

Travelling reserve Anna Ross-Davies will take Carl's place riding Donald McTaggart's Liebling II. Anna received the news while competing at a national show in Thann, Germany. Three international judges of the highest level, O, had just awarded her 69.8% in the grand prix, putting her in second place. Anna, who trains in Germany with Ulla Salzgeber, said: “I had just come out of the prize-giving when I had the call to say I was on the team. It feels like I’ve been put in a catapult. It is a great shame for the team to lose Carl, but I will certainly do my best.”
