Lots going on this week as usual in the dressage world with a couple of headliners being the wrap up to the Markel/UESF National Championships for Young Dressage Horses in Leesburg, VA and Guenter Siedel's victories in Hamburg, Germany! A Totilas' colt, Total Ideal, brought the outstanding pice of 105,000 EUROs at auction...and researchers are asking if your horses job affects his/hers personality. An avid dressage rider is getting a second chance after battling Leukemia and Cornell has developed a battery operated ultrasound therapy device. And outside the dressage theme, we have this weekends Belmont Stakes coming and in a slower pace, a cowboy who is riding across the country to raise awareness for children's cancer...



The show season marches on this weekend with several shows in the south including the Suncoast Sunburn Classic - Tampa, FL, Dressage by the River - New Market, TN, and The Good Horseman/Collecting Gaits Farm Annual Dressage Show in Conyers, GA. To the north we have the DVCTA Dressage at Fair Hill in Elkton, MD, Mystic Valley Hunt Club Dressage Gales Ferry, CT and in the mid-west there are several shows including Silverwood Dressage in Camp Lake, WI, ODS Down Centerline in Delaware, OH, Al Khamsa Dressage June in Dawson, IL and the Dressage At Alpine Long Lake, MN. Out west, we have RMDS Winter Wake-Up in Greekey, CO, Dressage at Intrepid Farms in Moorpark, CA, Whidbey Equestrian Center "Benefit" Dressage Coupeville, WA and the Central Oregon Dressage Classic Power Butte, OR.

This past weekend, the final selection trial of the Markel/USEF National Championships for Young Dressage Horses took place at the VADA/Nova Summer Show in Virginia. One horse made the cut scoring the required 8.2% needed to earn a trip overseas to Verden for the FEI WOrld Breeding Championships for Young Horses. Somer Hit, a 5-year-old stallion (Sandro Hit) ridden by Lauren Chumley performed “the best canter we have seen” noted the judges scoring it a 9.0! Read the recap of the 5-year-old Division here!

Just one year to the week since suffering a broken pelvis in a riding accident on UII while in Germany preparing for the 2011 Alltech/FEI World Equestrian Games, Guenter Seidel has had a major victory by winning the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Freestyle at the Hamburg CDI4*. Read More Here!

The 50th Oldenburg Special Auction and Summer Mixed Sale in Vechta, Germany proved a success with the highest bid going to the Totilas x Rubinstein colt, Total Ideal for 105,000 Euro! The black colt caused quite the media stir when a bidding war took place, but the winning bidder was from Hesse, Germany! See the stunning colt here!

Does your horses work affect his personality? That is what a group of French researchers wanted to know! They took a large group of 119 geldings and set out to do just that. The horses were divided into groups, living under the same conditions, but ridden in different "jobs" then their reactivity was tested in a series of situations. Mary Winchell was on her second career with horses in dressage and in her commitment, she started working out to take it to the next level in her riding. After time in the gym produced little results and a series of respiratory infections, the reason was caught in her routine annual physical - acute myeloid leukemia. Now 10 years later, after many close calls with death, she is back int the saddle! Read more about her remarkable story!

A Cornell Universtiy researcher has developed a battery-operated device called the ZetrOZ that will allow a horse to excercise or be turned out while receiving ultrasound therapy. The device is about the siz of an iPod Nano and was tested by veterinarians and therapists at the Rood & Riddle and Hagyard equine hospitals. The product did allow great benefit to healing of injuries. Read more about the device here...

While not dressage related - Chris Blethen is truly a "Cowboy with a Cause". Blethen is a kidney cancer survivor and is raising awareness for Heros for Children a charity that provides social and financial help for families of children with cancer in Texas. He has four horses on the trip with him and travels 20 miles per day. See more about this heart touching story here.

While there will be no Triple Crown winner this year, the upcoming Belmont Stakes, being held Saturday June 11, 2011, will prove to be an interesting race. Shackleford, the Preakness Stakes Winner is confirmed for the race and it will be an interesting dual as some believe that the late charging Animal Kingdom, the Kentucky Derby winner, just ran out of track.
