Lake Placid, New York - Devin Ryan of Long Valley, NJ rode Cooper to victory in the $30,000 CMJ Sporthorse Jumper Classic Friday at the 46th annual Lake Placid Horse Shows, Presented by Sea Shore Stables, LLC. Ryan was one of 11 entries from the field of 28 starters to advance to the jump-off by riding without penalty over the 15-jump first-round course designed by Richard Jeffery.
Ninth to return for the 8-jump tiebreaker course, he finished fault-free in 39.606 seconds to take over the lead from Paul O'Shea of Ireland, winner of last Sunday's $75,000 Devoucoux Grand Prix of Lake Placid, who had led with a clean ride in 41.105 seconds on Skara Glen's Dolphin. The final entry was Sloane Coles on Esprit and she finished clean in 40.869 seconds to move ahead of O'Shea but just behind Ryan for a second place finish.
"Cooper is such a great horse," Ryan said. "He's only eight years old and he's already doing all the big classes. I've had him since he was five and it's just recently that I figured out what I need to do to have him ready for these classes. He did a super job today and I'm really excited about what lies ahead."
