Custom Saddlery’s MVRs Juan and Paula Matute Score Big at Spanish Dressage Championships

Can Alzina, Spain – Custom’s two newest Most Valuable Riders proved their worth at the 2014 Spanish Dressage Championships, June 6-8 in Can Alzina, Spain. The brother and sister team of Paula Matute and Juan Matute, Jr. posted big scores while riding in their Custom Saddles, and seem to be following in their father’s footsteps as they won a wide range of classes from the 5-year-old division to the Junior Team Test.

Juan Matute, Jr. started off the streak of success with Jamaicano, winning the 5-year-old Preliminary test with an 80.80%, and then topping that the next day with an 81.80%. In the final test the pair finished up with an 86.20% and as Reserve Champion in the 5-year-old Finals Test. The young horse classes at the Spanish Championships also served as selection trials for the World Young Horse Championships in Verden.

Juan and Paula then dominated in the Junior Team Championship Test and Individual Test, finishing first and second in each. Juan Matute and Dhannie Ymas finsihed first in both classes with a 69.784% and a 72.421%, while Paula and Firmamento Ymas finished just behind him with a 69.676% and a 68.50%. In the Junior Freestyle the two still placed in the stop three, with Juan and Dhannie taking the win with a 76.15%, and Paula just being edged out for second with a 71.4%.

Spain's first family of dressage, the Matutes, consist of three-time Olympian Juan Matute, Sr., 16 year-old prodigy Juan, Jr., the stylish and talented sister Paula, as well as the mother, wife and team organizer Maria.
