CDI-W Blainville Dressage International

Neil Ishoy Claims Victory In Intermediaire I

Blainville, Quebec - Neil Ishoy of Binbrook, ON, scored a convincing victory in the Intermediaire I at the CDI3*-W Blainville Dressage International taking place June 27-30 at the Blainville Equestrian Park, located north of Montreal, QC.

A total of 20 horses came down centerline in front of the panel of five international judges, but none were as impressive as Ishoy and Lone Star, his eight-year-old Hannoverian gelding sired by the well-known thoroughbred stallion, Laurie's Crusador xx. In their first year competing in internationally-sanctioned events, Ishoy and Lone Star have attracted a lot of attention and their performance in Blainville was no exception as a steady ride highlighted by impressive trot work and well-balanced canter pirouettes earned the pair a final score of 72.2000%. There was no disagreement from the judges as all five had rewarded Ishoy with scores over 70.000% for first place.

Ishoy, 47, whose wife, Cindy, was a member of the Canadian Dressage Team that earned the Bronze Medal at the 1988 Olympic Games, is a former eventing competitor who represented Canada at the 1980 Alternate Olympics and the 1982 World Championships. Together, the couple operates a dressage training and sales business, Ishoy Enterprises, near Hamilton, ON.

Taking second was Daphne Haagmans of Barrie, ON, riding Nimos, her 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding. The pair earned a score of 68.100%. Jacqueline Brooks, who had dominated the division at the CDI-W Ottawa Summer Dressage Classic held one week earlier and also won the Prix St. Georges on Wednesday in Blainville, finally saw her winning streak come to an end as she placed third in the Intermediaire I with a score of 66.850%. Her partner is Balmoral, an eight-year-old Canadian-bred gelding purchased for her three years ago by Anne and John Welch, Nick and Jean Vimos, and Brinc Ltd.

Belinda Trussell of Stouffville, ON, earned the same score as Brooks but lowered collective marks left her in fourth place with Grand Marnier, a 10-year-old Hannoverian gelding owned by her husband, Mark Trussell. American Tom Noone made his trip north worthwhile by claiming fifth and sixth place in the Intermediaire I. With Just For Fun 13, Noone earned 65.800% while Incognito, a colourful paint Dutch Warmblood gelding, scored 65.650% for sixth position.

Victoria Winter of Oakville, ON, was the sole competitor in the Grand Prix Special as all the other Grand Prix riders have entered Saturday evening's 'Musical Freestyle Extravaganza'. Riding Gotcha, her 10-year-old Oldenburg gelding by Granulit, Winter earned 55.520% in her first Grand Prix outing at the international level.

The Finals were held for the FEI Young Horse classes on Friday. Winning the FEI Six-Year-Old Finale was Lee Tubman of Smithville, ON, riding De La Rosa, a dark bay Hannoverian mare by De Niro that is owned by Ducat Developments. In the FEI Five-Year-Old Finale, Neil McIntosh of Ste-Adele, QC, emerged the winner with a high score of 82.200% riding Argo Conti Tyme. Owned by Canadian Olympian Evi Strasser, Argo Conti Tyme is a dark bay licensed Oldenburg stallion by Argentinus out of a Continue dam.

In the FEI Children Individual test, Kerry Houlahan and Fresco scored 61.667% to take the win over Kaitlin Bourgon of Elgin, QC, and the colourful paint gelding, Finding Nemo.

The Freestyles were held on Friday for the FEI Young Rider, Junior and Pony divisions. The Young Rider Freestyle was hotly contested as Blainville represents the final opportunity for competitors to qualify for the 2007 North American Young Riders' Championship to be held in Lexington, Virginia, in August. Three riders were very closely placed in the final standings, with Brittany Fraser of New Glasgow, NS, edging ahead with a final score of 66.917%. Riding to music compiled by Canadian freestyle designer Karen Robinson of Applause Dressage, Fraser claimed victory aboard Furio, her 11-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding.

In close second was Cecile von Martels of Ridgetown, ON, who rode Downtown to 66.583% while Julie Watchorn of Schomberg, ON, riding Quintesse performed to 'Amadeus' to take third with 66.333%.

Jade Deter of Kemptville, ON, went undefeated in the FEI Junior division open to riders aged 14-18. On Friday, she won for the third day in a row, earning a score of 71.000% for her Freestyle performance with Mastermind, her 10-year-old Westphalian gelding.

Quebec's Tatianna Turcotte made a clean sweep of the FEI Pony division. Having won both the team and individual test, Turcotte returned to the ring on Friday to win the Freestyle with a score of 69.083% riding her Connemara pony, Serenity's Dream On.

More musical freestyles, which see the riders choreograph required movements to the music of their choice, will be on display on Saturday evening, June 30. The featured event of the Blainville Dressage International, the spectacular 'Musical Freestyle Extravaganza' begins at 6 p.m. A sell-out the past nine years, thousands of fans gather for an evening of fun and entertainment as the top competitors in the country 'dance' for the crowds.

In addition to the CDI3*-W Blainville Dressage International taking place from June 27-30, the Blainville Equestrian Park also plays host to the two-week Blainville Jumping International from July 4-8 and July 11-15.
