Ottawa, ON — Two back-to-back World Cup Qualifying Dressage CDI competitions were held recently at Iron Horse Equestrian Complex in Milton, ON. The CDI-W Milton Summer Classic was held June 17–19, followed by the CDI-W Milton International Classic, which ran from June 24–26. Both competitions were held in conjunction with Equine Canada Gold shows, making them very popular with competitors. At the CDI-W Milton Summer Classic, Jacqueline Brooks of Cedar Valley, ON won the World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix Freestyle. She and her 2008 Olympic partner Gran Gesto (Grannox x Goldstern), a 16-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Brinc Ltd. and Anne Welch, received a score of 69.875%. Cheryl Meisner of Blandford, NS followed close behind in second with Paganini, John Risley’s 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion (Havidoff x Statuar) scoring 68.850%.
The Grand Prix test was won by Diane Creech of Caistor Centre, ON, riding Devon L, (De Niro x Wolkenstein II), an 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding owned by Creech’s long-time sponsor Douglas Leatherdale with a score of 66.043%. Meisner and Paganini finished in second with 65.533%.
Creech and Devon L were also victorious in the Grand Prix Special with 69.042%. In second with 68.313% was Victoria Winter of Toronto, ON with her 2010 World Equestrian Games mount Proton, Neil and Cindy Ishoy’s 17-year-old Baden-Wurttemburger gelding sired by Patriarch.
The Advanced division saw a considerable number of entries, as riders were looking to earn scores to qualify for the Pan American Dressage team trials to be held in August. These trials will be a head-to-head format for the top 15 qualified horse/rider combinations. (The first will be held at the Caledon Gold Dressage Show Aug. 5–7 at Orangeville Show Grounds, followed by the final trial at the Cornerstone Summer Classic Gold Dressage Show Aug. 19–21 at the Caledon Equestrian Park.)
Tom Dvorak of Hillsburgh, ON won the Prix St. Georges class with Viva’s Salieri W, Augustine and Christine Walch’s 10-year-old Hanoverian stallion sired by Viva Voltaire. Tina Irwin of Stouffville, ON and Winston, Mary Ellen Horgan’s 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding sired by Whinny Jackson, were second with 67.763%. The two combinations were first and second again in the Intermediaire I class, with Dvorak and Viva’s Salieri W earning 72.851 for first, and Irwin and Winston close behind in second with 71.053%. The Intermediaire Freestyle saw their positions reversed — Irwin won the class with 73.325%, and Dvorak placed second with 72.250%.
This CDI was also an opportunity for Junior and Young riders to qualify for the 2011 Adequan FEI North American Junior/Young Rider Championships (NAJYRC), to be held July 27-31 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. Alexandra Dvorak of Hillsburg, ON, won the FEI Young Rider Team and Freestyle (68.175%) tests and was second in the Individual test (64.518%) with Fling, Tom Dvorak’s 11-year-old Westphalian gelding sired by Florestan I. Bronwyn Barlow Cash of Brantford, ON, riding Ferdinand Haupt’s 13-year-old Hessein gelding, Rubirondo, finished in second behind Dvorak in both the Team and Freestyle (66.025%) tests and won the Individual test with 66.053%.
In the FEI Junior Division, Ally Dunlop of Burlington, ON, and her horse Danero, an eight-year-old Bavarian Warmblood gelding, won the Individual and Freestyle (64.800%) tests. Anneka Sutton of Drumbo, ON, won the Team test riding Fidelio, her 13-year-old Westphalian gelding, and Julie Channell was second aboard Rela, her eight-year-old Canadian Warmblood mare. Sutton and Fidelio were second in the Individual test, while Nicole Babich Morin was second in the Freestyle riding Fox Fire, a 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding owned by Babich Morin and Sandra Babich.
The international judging panel for the CDI-W Milton Summer Classic included Stephen Clarke (FEI 5*—GBR), Elisabeth McMullen (FEI 5*—CAN), Kurt Christensen (FEI 4*—DEN), Reinhard Seim (FEI 4*—GER) and Joan Macartney (FEI 4*—CAN).
The following week the CDI-W Milton International Classic saw Brooks and Grand Gesto winning the World Cup Qualifier Grand Prix Freestyle once again, earning 70.821% for their strong performance. This bodes well for the pair, who has represented Canada at the Pan American, Olympic Games as well as the World Cup. 2010 WEG team member Winter and Proton finished second with 70.661%.
Winter and Proton won the Grand Prix with a score of 67.766%, and Meisner and Paganini were second, scoring 65.410%. In the Grand Prix Special, Creech and Devon L won with a score of 65.967%. Meisner finished second with Tango (Obelisk x Lohengrin), an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood she co-owns with sponsor John Risley.
This week, Tom Dvorak and Tina Irwin battled it out again in the Advanced division, and Diane Creech came along for the ride. It was Dvorak who topped the leaderboard in the Intermediaire I Freestyle test, scoring 74.500% with Viva’s Salieri W. Irwin and Winston placed second with a score of 74.225%. Creech and Robbie W, an eight-year-old Oldenburg gelding sired by Rubin Royal owned by Douglas Leatherdale, won the Intermediaire I test with 71.447%, adding to her Prix St. Georges victory of 71.404%. Irwin had to settle for second in both classes again, scoring 70.614%% in the Intermediaire 1, and 69.123% in the Prix St. Georges.
Alexandra Dvorak and Fling swept Young Riders division winning the Team (69.079%), Individual (67.579%) and Freestyle (69.050%) tests. Kristen Sutton of Drumbo, ON, finished second in the Individual and Freestyle (64.225%) tests riding Robic, her 17-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding. Barlow Cash and Rubirondo were second in the Individual test with 64.781%.
The Junior Team test was won by American Emma Woroch and Litmanen with a score of 64.324%. Second place went to Babich Morin and Foxfire. The Individual test was won by Noémie Gagnon-Bergeron of Kanata, ON and Vavite Fortuna, her nine-year-old Warmblood mare, with 66.184%. Anneka Sutton and Fidelio were second with 65.570%. With a score of 66.775%, Dunlop and Danero won the Freestyle, and Woroch and Litmanen, were second with 66.375%.
