It was a homerun - National Reining Breeders Classic-style - for Breanna Van Der Schaaf and Hes At Bat. The duo marked a 146 and earned the championship in the National Reining Horse Association Limited Non Pro class.
This is not Van Der Schaaf's first success at the NRBC. Richmond, Texas, trainer Steve Archer coached her to several youth titles, but it's been 10 years since the 26-year-old attended the show.
After going to college and taking a break from reining, Van Der Schaaf purchased "Jeter" and began riding with Andrea Archer, Steve's wife.
"Steve had Jeter in the barn and was showing him, and the opportunity arose for me to buy him," she said. "Now I finally have a good horse to show. He never tries to cheat me in the pen."
Van Der Schaaf also helps Andrea with her business, creating sparkling, crystal-adorned belt buckles. Jeter proudly sported a Yankees buckle, of course, on his headstall during his win picture
There was a four-way tie for the Limited Non Pro Reserve Championship. Sharing the honor were Alicia Knowles and Electric Moon, Kelly Hale and Twilight Rooster, Carolyn Tellepsen and Custom Strategy, and Jill Martin and New Olena Cash. Each pair marked a 142.5.
Both winning a buckle for tying for the most points over two days of Limited Non Pro competition were Alexa Maass on Flashy With Chrome and Javier Melo on Heza Bantie Rooster.
