Australian Sam Griffiths upset the Fox-Pitt/Nicholson/Jung party by taking the lead at the halfway stage of the first day of dressage at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. Sam and Happy Times posted a score of 43.3 to lead the field by a little less than two marks.

“I am over the moon. I made a few little mistakes, so wasn’t expecting to go into the lead, but the quality of his work was so good that it kept the marks up,” said Sam.

Andrew Nicholson began his Rolex Grand Slam bid with a solid test aboard Avebury for a score of 45. He currently lies in second place. “There was a bit of miscommunication in the rein-back, so we fluffed the canter strike-off, which was my fault,” admitted Andrew.

William Fox-Pitt and Oslo lie third on 45.8.
