Loxahatchee, Florida – With his owner/rider Caroline Roffman in the saddle, Bulgari 5 came back from a two-year hiatus to win the FEI Young Rider Freestyle at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI. The pair took their win with a score of 69.80 riding to a mix of music in the Italian style of a Roman holiday in a freestyle designed by Terri Gallo. The 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding had been the 20-year-old rider's mount for many years of junior/young rider competition. But two years ago, he tore a tendon during an awards ceremony at the North American Junior/Young Rider Championships. "He has never been good in the awards ceremony, but they wanted all the medalists there," Roffman said. It was believed at the time that the injury was the end of his career. "It was heartbreaking," Roffman said. Bulgari then spent nearly two years hanging out in a field until last year, when he started galloping about his field looking perfectly sound and Roffman's vet, Rick Mitchell suggested she try him out. Hence, Roffman slowly started Bulgari back to work to see what would happen. What happened is that he stayed sound and has now found his way back into the show ring. The Derby was his first show since his injury and Roffman couldn't be more excited.
"I'm just so happy to have him back," Roffman said. "I've learned to take things one ride at a time because with horses you never know. If I could have a dream, it would be that I take him back to the Young Rider Championships this year. It's my last year as a Young Rider." It was a quick climb up to first for Roffman and Bulgari. Earlier in Derby competition, they placed seventh in the FEI Young Rider Team competition and third in Young Rider Individual competition.
When not working with her old partner, Roffman is busy as a rider with the horse sales business of Lars Petersen and Melissa Taylor – Global Dressage Sales. She has the lucky job of riding many of the sales horses. "It's wonderful being part of the business and working with Lars and Melissa," Roffman said. Also helping her with Bulgari is Silke Rembacz, with whom Roffman trained for many years. "She's helping me again with Bulgari. So with her and Lars and Melissa it's a real team effort," Roffman said.
