The legendary dressage horse Bonfire (by Welt As) died today. An intensely sad Anky van Grunsven just announced this through Twitter. Anky: "My heart is broken. Bonfire died." Bonfire was a multiple Olympic medalist. He earned many national and international victories together with Anky van Grunsven, including the Olympics in Sydney in 2000. He also has his own statue and he was ambassador of several foundations for retired horses. Anky wrote about Bonfire on her website: "I bought Bonfire when he was 2.5-years-old. At that age it's difficult to see if a horse has talent for the Grand Prix but already then I knew there was something special about him. And special he was! Our career high-light was in 2000 in Sydney when we won the Olympic gold. Bonfire still is my favourite horse!" Bonfire was thirty years of age.
